The alligator needs a permit
When buying a home, it's crucial to do your due diligence and fully understand the unique environment and risks of the area. Many people move to Ocala, Florida, drawn by its appeal, yet some overlook important factors like local weather conditions and the surrounding natural environment. While proximity to good schools or friendly neighbors may be top of mind, it's equally essential to understand what it means to live in Florida's unique ecosystem.
For instance, it never ceases to amuse me when people from northern states move into one of the many 55+ communities here in Florida and encounter their first alligator. Seeing one swim in a man-made pond often sparks a mix of panic and confusion, with someone inevitably asking if the alligator has a permit to live there. The truth is, living in Florida means accepting that nature, in all its forms, is part of your daily life.
Similarly, Florida’s weather demands respect and preparation. While Ocala is fortunate to be somewhat shielded from the worst effects of hurricanes that batter other parts of the state, we still experience heavy rains, higher water levels, and even tornadoes. Although our area tends to be bypassed by the strongest storms, as history has shown, it's never a guarantee that this will continue. Preparing for the unexpected is key.
The bottom line is that when you buy a home in Florida, you have to be aware of more than just the price and the community. You need to understand the natural and environmental factors that will inevitably play a role in your life. Doing your homework in advance will save you from surprises down the line.
