Securing Firearms: A Responsible Approach for Employers and Employees
As a business owner, the safety and well-being of your employees should be a priority. One often overlooked aspect of workplace safety is the secure storage of firearms, particularly those kept in employees' vehicles. While many individuals exercise their right to bear arms, it is crucial to ensure that these firearms do not fall into the wrong hands.

I fully support the Second Amendment.
Recent statistics paint a concerning picture. In 2022, nearly 122,000 guns were reported stolen nationwide, with over half of those taken from vehicles. This trend is not limited to any specific region; in the Tampa Bay area alone, approximately 9,000 guns were stolen over the past decade, with vehicle burglaries being the primary cause.
The consequences of stolen firearms extend beyond the individual gun owner. When guns are stolen, they are often used in illegal activities, which can have severe ramifications for the community at large. Moreover, a violent event involving a stolen firearm can be costly for the victim, the employee, and the employer, resulting in lost time, decreased focus, higher car costs, and more.
As an employer, you can take proactive steps to encourage responsible gun ownership among your employees. Begin by initiating an open and respectful dialogue about the importance of securely storing firearms, both at work and at home. Emphasize that this is not about infringing upon their rights but rather about promoting a safer environment for everyone.
Those who have an unjustified Kool Aid liberal view of guns and who disrupt efforts for a rational discussion, including but not limited to name calling, intimidation, and threats of any type, should be terminated immediately for cause.
Encouraging employees who keep firearms in their vehicles to invest in secure storage solutions, such as lockboxes or vehicle safes is nothing more than a reminder of a common sense approach. These devices can significantly reduce the risk of theft, as criminals are often opportunists who seek easy targets. By making it more difficult and time-consuming to access a firearm, you can deter potential thieves.
It is also essential to note that reporting lost or stolen firearms is not mandatory in all states. Only 15 states currently require gun owners to report such incidents, meaning that the actual number of stolen guns is likely much higher than reported. As a responsible employer, consider implementing a policy that requires employees to promptly report any auto burglary to the employer and applicable law enforcement agency, especially involving lost or stolen firearms, regardless of state laws.
Promoting the secure storage of firearms among employees is a crucial step in maintaining a safe workplace and community. By encouraging open communication, providing guidance on secure storage solutions, and emphasizing the importance of reporting lost or stolen guns, employers foster a culture of responsible gun ownership and mitigate the risks associated with firearm theft.
